Happy Top Doodles having lake fun!

Summer is here, which means sunshine, outdoor adventures, and more time with your Doodle. While these warmer months are full of fun, they also come with a few challenges for our furry companions, especially those with thick, wavy coats like goldendoodles and Bernedoodles.

At Happy Top Doodles, we want to make sure you and your pup are ready to enjoy the season safely. Here are some simple, practical ways to help your Doodle stay cool, comfortable, and happy all summer long.

☀️ 1. Time Your Outdoor Fun

Midday heat can be tough on dogs, especially high-energy breeds with fluffy coats. Plan walks and playtime early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is lower and the pavement is cooler.

A good rule of thumb? If the ground is too hot for your hand—or your bare feet—it’s too hot for their paws. Stick to shaded paths, grass, or dirt trails during the hottest parts of the day.

💧 2. Keep Hydration Front and Center

Dogs can overheat quickly, and hydration is key. Always have fresh, cool water available—especially if you’re outside. Bring a collapsible water bowl or a travel bottle designed for dogs if you're on the go.

You can even make it fun by adding ice cubes or offering frozen dog-safe treats (like bits of banana or plain yogurt in a Kong) to help keep them refreshed.

🌿 3. Create a Cool Retreat

Whether in the backyard or at the lake, ensure your Doodle has access to a shady spot. Pop-up tents, covered patios, and even cooling mats can provide relief during hotter hours.

Even if you’re outside enjoying the sun, your pup may need breaks in a cooler, quieter space more often than you do.

🐾 4. Protect Those Paws

Hot pavement, sand, or decking can burn your puppy’s paw pads. In addition to timing your walks carefully, keep an eye on the surfaces your dog is walking or playing on.

Check their paws regularly—summer hikes and backyard play can also bring splinters, burrs, or small cuts. Dog booties can be a helpful investment if you’ll be out and about often.

🛁 5. Water Play—With a Little Caution

Many Doodles love to splash, whether it’s in a kiddie pool, a lake, or even the backyard sprinkler. Supervised water play is a great way to cool off, but keep these tips in mind:

  • Dry their ears thoroughly to help prevent infections

  • Rinse off chlorine, sand, or lake debris after swims

  • Monitor for signs of fatigue—puppies can tire faster in water than you think

  • Consider a dog life jacket for added safety, especially if you’re on a boat, at the lake, or if your Doodle is new to swimming

Not every dog is a natural swimmer, so ease them in gradually and keep water fun, positive, and stress-free.

✂️ 6. Should You Shave Your Doodle? Not So Fast.

It’s a common question this time of year: “Should I shave my dog to keep them cool?”

For most Doodles, the answer is no. Their coats offer protection not just from cold, but also from sunburn and overheating. Instead of shaving, focus on:

  • Regular brushing to prevent matting

  • A light trim around the belly, paws, and face for comfort

  • Keeping their coat clean and tangle-free so air can circulate

Talk to your groomer about a “summer cut” that maintains the coat’s integrity while helping your pup stay comfortable.

🧊 7. Know the Signs of Overheating

Even with precautions, it’s essential to recognize the warning signs of heat exhaustion:

  • Heavy panting or drooling

  • Lethargy or difficulty standing

  • Bright red gums or glazed eyes

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, or collapse

If you notice any of these symptoms, immediately move your dog to a cool, shaded area, offer water, and contact your vet.

🎆 Bonus Tip: July 4th Is Coming

Fireworks are a big part of summer fun, but they can be scary for puppies. Start preparing now by:

  • Playing low-volume fireworks sounds during playtime

  • Creating a quiet, cozy “safe zone” inside your home

  • Having long-lasting chews or frozen treats ready to distract and calm

You can also talk to your vet about calming products if your dog seems especially anxious.

🌞 Final Thoughts

Summer can be one of the most joyful seasons for Doodle families—full of long walks, porch naps, and backyard play. With a little planning and a lot of love, you can help your puppy enjoy every sun-drenched moment safely and comfortably.

As always, if you have questions about grooming, puppy routines, or Doodle care in the heat, we’re here to help. We love to support you and your pup.

Cheers to sunshine, splashes, and sweet puppy snuggles!
